At Epilia, we offer the Nd:YAG dermatological laser, specifically designed to treat dark and black skin, corresponding to phototypes 5 and 6.
Internationally recognized, Candela technology is a benchmark in laser hair removal. It provides a safe and effective solution for everyone—men and women alike—regardless of the body area being treated.
With a wavelength of 1064 nm, the Nd:YAG laser penetrates deeply without crossing the dermis. It precisely targets the hair root by acting on the micro-vessels responsible for its growth, while preserving the skin’s melanin.
This technology significantly reduces the risk of burns, ensuring laser hair removal that is perfectly suitable for dark skin.

Gentle laser hair removal
Because we know that comfort plays a key role in your experience, Epilia Geneva is equipped with an innovative system that cools the skin during the laser session. This helps reduce unpleasant sensations such as heat or tingling.
This technological advancement not only enhances your comfort during treatment, but also optimizes long-term results.

What are the contraindications for the Nd:YAG laser?
- It is essential to distinguish between naturally dark skin and tanned skin. A recent tan (less than 2 weeks) is a contraindication for Nd:YAG laser hair removal, regardless of the machine used, to avoid any risk of burns.
- Laser treatment is not recommended for pregnant women.
- Areas with infectious inflammation should not be treated.
- Tattooed areas or those with permanent makeup are not suitable for laser treatment. Only the surrounding area can be treated, in order to preserve the tattoo or makeup.
Recommendations before Nd:YAG laser treatment
- Some medications can increase skin sensitivity. Please inform your practitioner before the session.
- It is essential not to have removed hair from the area (with wax, tweezers, cream, or epilator) within the 4 weeks prior to the treatment (2 weeks if the area is the face).
- Avoid shaving between sessions.
- Before the session, hair should be very short (maximum 2 mm), so remember to shave or trim a few days beforehand. Women should not shave the face, fine hair areas, or hormonally sensitive zones.
- Make sure the skin is free of any product (makeup, cream, perfume, etc.).
- Avoid wearing new, unwashed clothes in the days leading up to the appointment to prevent skin reactions.

Steps of a YAG laser hair removal session
Your arrival at Epilia Geneva
Considering a YAG laser treatment for dark skin? We will be happy to welcome you to our Epilia Geneva center.
Book your free initial consultation now by calling +41 22 321 20 00.
Upon arrival, you will be invited to settle into our warm and well-kept waiting area. The center’s environment is designed to combine serenity with professionalism.
The initial consultation, which is free and mandatory, allows us to assess your needs before beginning the laser treatment.
Our team values punctuality: your laser assistant will then take over to begin the YAG laser session. She will ask you a few practical questions, then get you comfortably set up for the treatment.

Preparation before the laser application
The assistant will begin by carefully marking the area to be treated using a white pencil, ensuring that no spot is missed. You will wear protective goggles throughout the treatment as a safety measure. She will then proceed with the application of the Nd:YAG laser over the entire defined area.
Conclusion de la séance
At the end of the session, the assistant will apply a soothing cream to calm the skin. Side effects such as redness or swelling are minor and usually disappear quickly. Payment is made immediately afterward, followed by the scheduling of your next appointment.
Simple and hassle-free payment
Epilia centers offer convenient and secure payment options. Each session is paid individually at the end of the treatment, with no advance payment required for future sessions. We are committed to respecting your freedom and comfort every step of the way.
Post-session precautions
If you experience prolonged heat in the treated area, contact our Epilia Geneva center without delay. Keep the skin regularly hydrated to support recovery. Hair bulb expulsion typically occurs within 2 to 3 weeks. Gentle exfoliation may help speed up the process. Be sure to avoid any sun exposure for at least 7 days.
Estimated duration of YAG laser sessions
The time required for a YAG laser hair removal session depends on the size of the treated area. Smaller areas, such as the face or underarms, typically take around fifteen minutes. Larger areas may require a bit more time.
Post-treatment recommendations:
- For the three days following your session, frequently moisturize the skin with a simple, fragrance-free cream.
- Avoid using abrasive skincare products or strong exfoliants.
- The hair bulb will fall out in the coming weeks; a gentle scrub around day 10 can help.
- If the underarms were treated, avoid alcohol-based deodorants for 72 hours.
- Limit hot showers, baths, saunas, or steam rooms in the days following the session.
- Protect the treated area from sun exposure for at least one week to avoid skin reactions.

Please note :
It is important to understand that laser hair removal on dark skin does not work on white or grey hair, as these lack melanin, making it impossible for the laser to effectively target them. Mucous membrane areas and fine vellus hair also tend to yield more limited results.
Additionally, in certain specific cases, the focus is more on improving quality of life: for men, women under the age of 30, hormonally sensitive areas, or patients suffering from hormonal imbalances.
